Is HDMI fine for 2560x1080p gaming, or should I get a displayport cable?

I have the LG 29UB55-B monitor which has a 60hz refresh rate, but I'm wondering if HDMI is cutting it down to 50. I've heard that HDMI only supports up to 1080p resolutions at 60hz and at a higher resolution like 2560x1080 ultrawide the refresh rate drops to 50. Can anyone provide some insight on this? I don't want to buy a displayport cable if I don't need it. Thanks!

It depends on the HDMI version implemented by the monitor and video card. Anything with HDMI 1.3 or newer will support 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz over HDMI. HDMI 1.3 was finalized in 2006 so you're probably safe. But several manufacturers are really slow to implement these things. Intel for instance is still using HDMI 1.4a even though HDMI 2.0 has been out for two years, and their newest iGPUs can support HDMI 2.0-resolutions (4k @ 60 Hz) over displayport.

I was able to find out my refresh rate by right-clicking the desktop and going to Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings > Monitor. It's running at 60Hz. Thanks for the response!
