I want to build a PC and I was going to use i5-7400 but then I saw this i3-8100. Is it good for gaming?
i3-8100 has 4 cores and it has 3.6Ghz.
Is i3-8100>i5-7400 (for gaming)?

Solution
If $175 is your bottom line then yes the 8100 is better, but not by a ton.
If you could spring for the 8350k that would be even better, and it can be overclocked.

You need to keep in mind that the 7100 and the 8100 will require totally different boards to run. The new chipsets are not backwards compatible as I understand, and the older boards will not support 8th gen chips. I could be wrong on that, but you need to factor in the cost of the motherboard. If you don't have one at all then it's not a big deal.

Forgot about that. But still talking strictly performance, 8th gen is still better.
