is i5 6500 generally faster than i7 6700 HQ

as the title said, I'm comparing laptop processor to desktop processor. i7 has extra threads.

why does i5 perform better?
 
Intel has been playing fast and loose with the i3/i5/i7 names the last three generations (Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake). Those names used to mean you could expect specific features, but lately that's not always true.

Normally the i7 quads have 8MB cache, but the i7-6700HQ only has 6MB just like the i5 quad. That essentially eliminates the i7's only advantage over the i5 on single-threaded tasks. So unless hyperthreading comes into play, the i5-6500's higher clock speed (3.2 GHz + 1/2/3/4 turbo) will beat out the i7-6700HQ (2.6 GHz + 5/7/7/9 turbo).

Except for clock speed and parts of the CPU being enabled or disabled, there is no difference between the mobile and laptop CPUs (though the naming nomenclature differs). Intel doesn't have separate manufacturing lines for desktop and laptop CPUs. They just make CPUs.

Each CPU that comes out of the fab plant gets tested to see how low they can reduce the voltage and still have the CPU function without errors. The ones which work at lower voltages (and thus lower power consumption) get binned as laptop CPUs. The rest become desktop CPUs.

If it is faster for gaming, how about for video editing, will this mobile i7 6700 hq faster? When I check the cache, it is the same as i5. 6 mb.

Do you think i7 lose that much to i5 desktoo? Or just i5 wib by a margin? If for day to day and basic activities, theyshould perform about the same right?
 
depends on the video editting software. If the software supports hyperthreading, then the mobile i7 might be a little bit faster, though I doubt it would be much. Problem is the ram, that i7 only supports slow low power laptop ddr3 ram. where as video editting is very sensitive to ram, and eats up a lot of it. So a desktop with 16GB of fast DDR4; will curb stomp a laptop with dd3.
 


For just editing the i7 barely edges it out. Not enough difference to really matter.
