Hello guys I am planning to add GTX 1080 as an external gpu to my laptop which is i7 4510U 8gb Ram and 256 SSD drive. My question is Will the CPU handle that graphics card power ? and will ir work full power. I tried it with weaker graphics card and it worked.

thanks for answers!!

Solution

Using a gpu without an enclosure leaves it very exposed. I'm guessing you don't mind the extra noise, but you will have to clean/dust your gpu much more frequently. It is also completely unprotected against spills or anything else flying through the air. That connector/dock also looks really easy to knock over, which you definitely do not want to do while the gpu is on.

You will also need to...

Why not? and still i7 4510U 2.0 ghz with turbo boost to 3.1Ghz , would it be capable of running it?

I was planning to use this: to connect GPU:
V8.0 EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock

I saw bunch of videos in youtube and it works fine

You will also need to buy a gtx 1080 that takes a 6-pin and 8-pin adapters. The website says the "6P" is only for DELL computers. You will need to use both the 6-pin and 8-pin slots for a gtx 1080. Also, the website says that the connection is a mini-pcie and only works at "X1" mode. I can't tell if this is PCI-E 2.0 or 3.0. If its pci-e 2.0, there's almost no point in trying a gtx 1080 as you'll only be able to use a fraction of the processing power of your gpu.

And as other have said about your cpu, its actually a dual-core cpu with 4 threads. In gpu-heavy games, your cpu will bottleneck you first. I know you saw that the turbo boost speed is 3.1ghz, but the max speed for all 4 cores at once is lower.

Solution
This will be a very interesting setup for sure. We all know you will have do deal with 2 sources of bottleneck: The interface and the cpu.
I think the major problem will be the interface. But the cpu is not that good either.
