I was wondering if installing Linux on an external drive and running it on my Windows laptop a good idea.
I could do it on a Virtual Machine of course but I have known that doesn't allow the full potential of the hardware to get used.
Also I don't want to partition my drive and install it on that because I'm afraid messing up my laptop's warranty.
Thanks in advance.

Warranty is typically for the hardware level. Mfg/vendors would be hard pressed to void a warranty based on a software concern..... For example, you get a virus, wipe the drive & reinstall Windows. The drive/OS install no longer appears as it did from the factory.

That being said, Linux can be installed to external HDDs or flash drives, so there's no harm in doing so.
