I had a Celeron Northwood 2.0ghz processor, now replaced by a prescott Pentium 4 2.8e ghz with HT.
Is it a good idea to use stock celeron fan and heatsink assembly with prescott p4, as currently i can't find my p4 cooler..
Will a layer of thermal compound be sufficient to solve the problem, as currently i am running at 1.8ghz with ht enabled.
Clocking it to 2.8ghz, and PC will restart after a minute or two due to overheating..

This is what is written on the top of the fan if it is helpful.

Pentium 4 now i have: http://ark.intel.com/products/30764/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-520521-supporting-HT-Technology-%281M-Cache-2_80E-GHz-800-MHz-FSB%29

The celeron is about a 50w part, the p4 about 90w. Its no wonder you have overheating issues. On the thermal compound, you do not want a "layer" of it. more is not better. take the heatsink off and scrap off the excess from both the cpu and the heatsink. Put a bb size dot of compund on the processor and mount the heatsink again. The mounting pressure will spread the compound in a very thin layer.

since you have the p4 underclocked to keep it cool (very smart of you) yes its ok to use the celeron cooler until you find your p4. The key is to avoid overheating the p4, they do like to burn out easily.

ok, so that means that i can't use this cooler to cool my pentium, i think thermal paste won't make such a difference as at 2.8ghz without ht, pc will standout 1-2minutes, but if i enable ht, it could'nt even pass the windows loading screen..

ok, i bought a new p4 fan, but the problem is that it still heats up @ 2.8ghz, and restarts..
I think that it is'nt running @ full rpm (the box states it should run @ 3500rpm ±10%)..
BIOS has no setting for temperature or fan speed and SpeedFan shows 0RPM on all fans.

Here are some images for better understanding:

3 Pin Connector

2 Pins onBoard

Because of two pins only, there's no option for fan control or temperature monitor in BIOS.

I made a video of spinning fan, hope anyone can tell by seeing this video that is it running @3500rpm or less...
Can anybody tell me any solution if the fan is not spinning @ full speed to make it spin to full speed?

Sorry I cant get youtube here at work. You said "new Fan" .. did you replave only the fan? Replacing the heatsink part is what was needed. Thats what the major portion of the heat disappating engine. The fan serves a dual purpose, the airflow helps remove the heat from the heat sink and sometime move the air outside the case itself.
