I have the Intel Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition 3.56 GHz and want to run 3 virtual gaming machines so I found this cpu: Intel xeon e5-2697 v2. Because it has 12 cores it should handle the 3 gaming vm's. But my question is: Can I change the CPU's when gaming solo with I7-6820HK and switch it occasionally when gaming with 3 vm's to the xeon cpu ?

And how well do you think the xeon would perform ?

Solution
Intel CPUs are easier to change (in my opinion) than AMD because the pins are on the motherboard and not the CPU. But, the biggest concern is still not bending the pins. Other than that, as long as you aren't gouging the top of the CPU with your cooler when installing, swapping CPUs is nothing to be concerned about.

*Be sure to have extra thermal paste on hand. Clean off completely and reapply on each install.

**How many GPUs do you have in your system? Isn't 4 gaming machines what you're going for? 3VMs plus your 1? Or just 3?
So you have a laptop that has an i7-6820HK, and you want to swap it with a Xeon E5-2697 V2??

No, not happening. Completely different sockets. The Xeon is a desktop/server CPU, not going in any laptop. Not to mention it is several generations older and wouldn't be interchangeable with any 6th-gen CPU.

Laptops aren't always made to be upgraded, but some can be. Already having an i7, I'd say you have the best CPU your laptop can handle.

I'm sorry I messed up the laptop cpu with my desktop one.
It should be Intel Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition 3.56 GHz

I have 3 GPU's , all the same. No, I want 3 gaming vm's.
Any idea how the games will perform? The latest games.

* I ask because I might sell the I7 CPU if it has good performance.
