a friend wants to upgrade his pc. is hd7850 compatible with this motherboard? ram is 4gb ddr2 800 and cpu is intel core2quad q8400. he mainly plays mmorpg. will it bottleneck? the vc is free since its from his cousin because he plans to buy a new one in a few months.

Solution
Q8400 and HD7850 should run fine. You will not notice the bottleneck.
the thing is, try to get to 8GB RAM if you can. Ebay is the best place to look for second-handed DDR2 today.

However, I wanna comment on his upgrade plan. If he is going to buy a new PC in a few months, I would rather leave the current PC as it is and do not spend any single cent anymore and put every penny better into the new PC.

pcie x16 slot so you good to go but you need to check 2 things:

your motherboard bios is the newest version from the gigabyte website

your power supply is powerful enough to run the new gpu

heres what im not sure about the pciex16 slot, if its 1.x or 2.x and since the hd7850 is a 3.0. according to some, there should be no problem if the slot is 2.0. I am not sure about 1.x

hmmm, that could be an issue.
I had a Q6600+P5E X38 and it can go up to 8GB DDR2.
hmmm...if Gigabyte said so, it should not be able to support 8GB, it is a pity but nothing can be done about it.
Upgrading LGA775 platform is actually quite a waste of money anyway.
THe HD7850 will work on any mobo with PCIe x16, regardless if they are 1.0, 2.0, or whatever.
The next thing which could be critical is if you have PSU less than 500W. HD7850 need about 500W.
