Can I crossfire my card with a 290? I was watching a techquickie video on sli vs crossfire, and it said as long as they are the same architectural family, then they will work. I pulled up a list of something here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Graphics_Core_Next

The 290/290X have the same architecture as my 260x. So will it work?

nope.

xfire works with similar "family" cores... in theory it works best with same cores, though it can work with similar performing cores in some cases (even if they're not sharing the same design)

so a r9-290 will xfire just fine with a r9-290x or r9-295x2, but it will not xfire with an r9-280x
an r9-280x will xfire with a r9-280 or hd 7870XT as they all share the same Tahiti core, but it won't xfire well with a similar performing but different cored r9-285

the r9-270x will xfire with the r9-270 and r7-265, which all have the same core design

in your case, your r7-260x will xfire with the r7-260, an hd 7790, or another r7-260x, nothing else really (though i've seen some people managing to xfire it (poorly) with r7-250x and r7-265... though i am pretty sure they modified the drivers to allow it.

according to AMDs chart you are wrong and you can only crossfire a 290 with a 290 not a 290x.

forgive me for debating an official chart from AMD, but the chart is 100% wrong.

heck, people have been xfiring all sorts of mismatched cards with completely different core and memory designs for a LONG time.

two hawaii gpus will xfire just fine. the r9-290 and r9-290x are both hawaii gpus. as is the r9-295x2 (which is actually 2 r9-290x cards).

the amd drivers will xfire those cards without question.
