I have a 9800 Pro. The thing is, he fan stopped and it went really hot. Artifacts apeered in the game I was playing (far cry). I turnd the pc off in that exact moment and I've bought a cooling kit. I've installed and the artifacs are still there. The card is cool and the cooler is working well. But I can't run anything 3d and even in Windows artifacs apeer. Is it possible to repair the board or its doomed? I just want to save my radeon...

*BANG*

It is now!

Seriously: things don't look good. I've never lost a card(knock on wood) though, so I'm not 100% sure.

A long long time ago, but I can still remember, how that music used to make me smile... <A HREF="http://www.nexus.hu/zonix/DIGGER.MID" target="_new"><b><font color=blue>Digger rulz</font color=blue></b></A>

You failed to tell us about the cooler you bought, and the methods you used to install it.

The cooler is a titan something. I've removed the original one with no problems. Then cleaned the termal paste (with a clean paper tissue) and aplied the new cooler with new termal paste. The pins os the new cooler entered easely and without any problem. I've checked the card's temp after using it for a while and it stayed cool. I've noticed that the old termal paste was brown but not dark brown. Just not the collor it was suposed to be. The chip of the card had no visible damage. But still it did not work well. any thougts?

I OCed my first Radeon LE way back in the day and it overheated big time. I got artifacts that never went away so I think your card has thermal damage, you cant fix that, and adding a better cooler now just prevents any further damage.

Sorry man

Get the stock fan back on, and RMA it. Since the fan died, defective product.

All the talk about thermal protection on Intel and AMD CPU's, but where's the protection for graphics cards? As far as I know, neither ATI or NVIDIA has thermal protection for their chips. I'd say isn't it about time that both companies incorporate thermal protection into their GPU's?

My system: AMD Athlon 64 3400+ / Corsair 2Gb DDR400 / MSI K8T Neo FIS2R / ASUS Radeon 9800XT / Antec TruePower 550W / Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 120 Gb / Pioneer DVR-A07

The only reason they put thermal protection on CPU's was to protect the core if the heatsink fell off (which on a CPU is not an unlikely event). On graphics cards the heatsink is eveer designed to be removed after it is first installed, so thermal protection should not be needed.

Nvidia and ATI's newer cards does have protection, at least i'm sure with with the FX lienup, if heatsink falls off, temp will rise to about 140C, and the computer will turn off. If temperature hits around 110C, the card will turn its core speed 100mhz below its 2D frequency.

True, but a fan could always fail.

the connector for the fan on my R9700pro slipped off for a couple of weeks, when I found this was the case & reconnected it my system is fine... I would have been playing Farcry for hours with my only problem being VPU protection kicking in every half hour for a minute...

Trust me I know what I'm doing... ooops, grab the cat...
