Is it just me or are Lexmark Laser printers just NOT sold ..

I'm looking for a C510N, and nobody with a retail outlet in the Boston
area seems to sell these printers! Not Staples, not Best Buy, not
OfficeMax, etc! It seems like Lexmark is only sold by "resellers" that
basically sell 'em from a warehouse. Any ideas? Before plonking down
$1000 for a printer, I want to see how it's going to work w/ my type
of printouts/pictures, etc. I guess if I don't get to see one, I'll
have to buy a HP 3500 =/.

Lexmark printers have not gotten good reviews lately. They also tend to
have the highest ink costs.

I wouldnt recommend ANYTHING with the Lexmark name on it.

First consideration is the cost of consumables (VERY high for any Lexmark
including the Laser printers).

Second consideration is reliability. I have YET to see a Lexmark printer that
could in any way be considered reliable after a few months use. They are
mostly cheaply made, poorly assembled, and not engineered to be reliable.

It was either PC World or PC Magazine pointed that out, but they
said it's not as it appears because the figures assume you pay list
price for Lexmark ink and toner.

If you can buy Lexmark toner at a discount, then you can also buy toner that
started out cheaper to begin with at a discount, still leaving the Lexmark at
a higher price. (given the same discount)

I dont bother to read magazine reviews about printers, rather I try to rely
on real world experience. Lexmark printers are NOT a good buy under most
circumstances.

As far as Im concerned the only way a Lexmark would be a bargain would be if
they PAID me to take it.

OK - what institution have you escaped from?! Only a masochist would buy a
Lexmark!

Wow!

I checked the reviews at Cnet/.com/Zdnet.com, and the 510N was rated
the Editor's choice?? Have you guys actually used this printer, or do
you have any info. to backup your assertions concering this particular
printer? Lasers and inkjets are made by different divisions.

Which printer would you recommend then?

Re. the comment on Brother lasers . . .

I purchased a Brother HL-10V in 1994, and it worked under very heavy
commercial printing requirements until last month. It finally died
(laser assy.). Of course, the HL-10V was a $1K printer, but most lasers
10 years ago cost over $1K.

I would certainly recommend Brother as an HP alternative, as my
experience proves their products are quite good.

I haven't. A (friendly) rival has an FS-C5016DN and is very [pleased
with it.

Previously, have had Kyocera B&W printers and they have always been
good too.

And their TCO is quite a bit lower than other makes.

It does look quite a good machine, and I'm also attracted by the lower
costs, particularly bits needing replacing.

Following up to myself - sure sign of madness! I also looked at the
pricing of the KM-850 which is basically the same machine but with the
photocopier/fax/scanner options, but I couldn't understand it as it
seemed cheaper to buy the bits separately.

did you include the price of a computer in the calculation ?
Without the computer you can't make copies. And that is what
you pay for.

Oh yes I reckon I can buy an fs-c8008, computer, scanner and separate a3
b/w photocopier for less than the km version.

The a3 photocopier for things that need only quick copies, otherwise use
the scanner if colour would be required.

Plus that way, if something goes wrong its not too much of a disaster.
