IMHO, HL1 was better as far as the fun factor is concerned. The graphics are
beautiful, the physics are incredible but all I've done so far is shoot a
bunch of combine troops. Seems kinda boring. I'm on Highway 17 and I'm hopin
it gets better. Not tryin to bash HL2, just wondering when I'll see some
real action!

I'd agree with that. I felt much more powerful in HL2 (except
Ravenholm) and generally more prepared to deal with whatever comes
next.

In HL1 I never quite knew what was around the next corner and was
generally expecting the enemies to get worse.

HL2's got some great set pieces and sections, such as Ravenholm, the
buggy turning upside down, the gunship fight on the highway, the
magnet, the dam, the strider/camera combination or the warehouse with
the moving-suspended-platform. But it doesn't hang together as well as
HL1 did. Sometimes it felt like there were several games all stuck
together. Eg. The Bug Bait is a one-off section, Ravenholm is a little
sub-game, the airboat and the buggy are driving games chucked in there.
All very good in their own right, but a little disjointed?

HL2 probably has more fun bits than the original, but HL1 is still the
superior game in my view, but I tend to prefer originals of anything to
sequels.....

Well, not really disjointed at all. Different scenery to be sure. Just
like you'd see driving from Houston to Galveston (58 miles). Same sorts
of people, but some of the critters differ for the terrain it seems.
I'd say it all fit. I really enjoyed Ravenholm. It reminded me of the
HL1 mod They Hunger a lot. I also enjoyed everything with the ant
lions. En toto, the game made for quite a ride I just had a hard time
walking away from! :)

Gee I liked Highway 17. I enjoy the stealth aspects more then you do I
guess. There are definitely other sections with more upfront action.

HL1 was special. It was new and fresh and there were some nice
surprises along the way. That's missing in HL2.

Except for the Ant Lions. Even though I'd seen them in the gamefootage
released long before the game, I was quite surprised by them. That we
had only combine and some alien fauna to fight was a disappointment. I
missed some of the enemies we had in HL1.

My gripe is that HL1 seemed more like one long game than HL2 does.
There are sections in HL2 which exist almost as discreet entities by
themselves. For example, there is the airboat section, the buggy
section, the antlion section, the zombie section (Ravenholm), the
supergrav-gun section, the squad section. They almost exist in their
own right as subgames. (As you say, Ravenholm reminds you of They
Hunger, rather than HL. But you can't say the same about the rest of
the game).

In HL1 the monsters were generally always present (with the exception
of the end bosses), not restricted to specific areas. Also the weapons
worked everywhere, unlike the Bug-Bait. There were some parts of HL1
where a specific monster type was used, but they were generally smaller
areas and a single battle (eg. the ninja women).

Yes, the different sections have been well stitched together (except
entering Ravenholm) and perhaps it is more true to life to have
different species in different habitats, but does it work as well for a
game as it does for real life?

Perhaps I am also comparing Far Cry, where vehicles form an intrinsic
part of the game but are available throughout, not just for specific
levels.

I felt HL1 definitely had it's 'sections' too. Some weren't quite as
clearly differentiated as in HL2. But Xan was :) Thing is, in HL1 you
never really got out of Black Mesa premises until going to Xan. But
I see your point about the divisions in HL2. Makes it seem like it's
some 4 different gametypes. We should have had things where use of the
vehicles could overlap. And why aren't we advanced enough to go from
one end of the game world to the other at will? You can't do it though.
