Question Is it my CPU or Motherboard that determine what speed of ram i should use?

I have a MSI x99A Raider Motherboard and an i7 6800k CPU nothing is OC'd.
My Manual for the Motherboard says its compatible with speed up to 3333MHz, but on the specs of the CPU it says up to 2400MHz, wich should i follow?

Follow the CPU. The max speed the CPU can support is 2400mhz, and the max speed for the Motherboard is 3333mhz. So, if the MAX for the CPU is lower than the Motherboard then I would obviously say follow the CPU.....
