My 2nd monitor has always been a crummy, smallish VGA monitor which I used during gaming sessions to watch YouTube or Movies, or keep track of my chat programs. However recently, with my purchase of a GTX 1060, I discovered that my old DVI-I adapter won't fit.

Doing research, apparently it's more complex to convert a VGA cable to a DVI-D one. Is it flat out impossible and do I need to consider pouring about 100 bucks just for a monitor that I barely use..?

Solution
DVI-I carries both analog and digital signals. The simple DVI to VGA adapter you used previously allowed for a simple conversion. However the DVI-D port on your graphics card is digital only and needs to be actively converter to an analog signal that your old VGA display can accept.

A converter like this one from Office Depot should do what you need it to do.

Solution

This is a tad bulkier than I expected! But if it works, then you solved all of my problems. :)

Thanks for the recommendation, i'll look into this. 😀
