Is this reasonable, or will it be noticably slower than a 2nd IDE/ata drive?

It will work, but it will be significantly slower than an internal IDE
drive.

I wouldn't. I would assume that an external drive of any kind
can be relied on only for backup and not for real-time file
access. (Unless you can prove otherwise with the actual
equipment combination.)
