Is it ok to pair my xeon x3440 with a gtx 1070?

I bought an old hp proliant with a xeon x3440 and im planning to pair it with a gpu like the 1070. How bad is the bottleneck? Thanks

VERY bad. That CPU is very old and will severely bottleneck the gtx1070. However, that isn't the sole issue. If I'm not mistaken, the Hp proliant series is equipped with 2GB of RAM, another bottleneck. Finally, the PSU will be insufficient, so no, it won't make a good pair. A gtx1050Ti would be more suitable to this build.

If you want to upgrade an old workstaion you should look into getting one of the HP, or Dell LGA1366 machines with one of the faster 32nm Westmere CPUs.
X5687 3.6GHz 4C/8T, or X5690 3.47GHz 6C/12T. 3 channel DDR3 RAM helps keep them relevant. Dell T3500 is popular for this.

Its the hp proliant h6 ml110 dude, im not looking to upgrade the cpu but i am upgrading the ram and powersupply. Im just looking for a good gpu to pair.

I would say with 8GB RAM a GTX1060 3GB, and with 12-16GB a GTX1060 6GB
