Is it okay to use SAS controller without battery?

I got a new SAS 2tb drive and decided I'd just go with an SAS controller. I bought an HP p410 and a SAS SFF-8087 cable, but apparently the controller has a separately purchased battery pack that, I guess, helps with write cache. I'm only running one drive on the controller, so will it be okay if I don't buy the battery? sort of related, is the battery rechargeable?

Solution
The battery is only really needed if you are using RAID 5/6 or any variant of that. If it is just RAID 1 or 0 or any variant of them, then no need. Just make sure the that RAID is set to Write Through and not Write Back with BBU and you will be fine. You might see a small performance decrease with smaller files, but you won't see any difference with huge video/iso files.
