Hey everyone... thank you in advance.
I currently have a NetGear Nighthawk, with a 5tb usb drive attached... I am trying to find out how to allow others to access it to upload files to folders they have specfic access to... Ideal situation... I can setup say 5 accounts with unique username and passwords that allows access to specific folders set for each user... Is it even possible? or am I just chasing a pipe dream?

If it's not possible, can you please recommend how to successfully do this?

Cheers

are you looking to access it from the internet or from the local home network?

that is 2 very different things

Iam looking to access from the internet... ie: I want to setup an account for you to access the usb drive... so you can upload some files for me... and then I can put some files there for you if needed...

But I also want to make sure that when I setup another person to do the same, they can't see the files you and I are sending back and forth..

I hope this helps??

Cheers

You might want to consider one of the many file sharing services. Many you get small amounts for free with say a amazon account. I guess it depends on how much data you are going to use.

So to even consider this you must have a public IP address. If you do not then you have no options but to use some cloud based service.

The router using simple windows filesharing. It is not really designed to be secure enough to run over the internet. I guess you could encrypt each file and then you won't care if someone stole them. You would have to be very careful about write access, bad people who say trade child porn will use open storage sites to keep their stuff to avoid getting caught.....and you will have a hard job proving it "wasn't me"

Best if you do this your self is to setup a VPN server on the router. There are many many versions of the nighthawk so you would have to check if you have the vpn server function. This would prevent unknown people from getting on your network. Running though the vpn should appear as if you are on the local lan.
At least in theory you should be able to get to a share on the router from the vpn. It all depends if the router is too stupid to understand how to talk between the vpn process and the file sharing process.

Again it might just be simpler to use some cloud based service unless you are doing it more for fun. Large companies stopped using their own data center years ago and now even the home user has many advantages to not doing it themselves.

Thanks for this... and yes! I have looked into the regular cloud sharing like Dropbox, Google, etc,etc... problem is the servers are based in the USA which has different privacy laws compared to Canada. I am sharing sensitive files with clients... and no, not porn.. but I get what you are saying in regards to that.

Is there any resources you can point me towards that would help me setup a VPN?

I just figured it would be easy with readyshare, but it doesn't seem to have that capability....

cloud services would be my first thought as well. would save a lot of grief, though i am not sure you can hide from every user what the other users are doing with the services.

readyshare is nice for the local LAN but i've never tried to access it from the web. not sure how i'd go about it other than the vpn idea above.

windows server (and other server OS's) is set up to share resources like this so that might be a way to go as well. but you really need someone who knows how to secure it since it can be a major security problem, especially for sensitive client data.

The first problem would be does the router have a VPN server feature.
You would have to read the manual for the router to see details for how you set it up. Most support openvpn and open vpn software tends to be the most common you can get to load on the machine that is doing the remote access.

There are many file encryption systems that are extremely strong. If you made a mistake and some one got to the files say in google cloud they still could not tell whats in the file. You would send the keys to whoever needs access via some other secure method.
