I'm looking to get a phone but I don't want to have to register the sim with my details. This isn't for 'dodgy' stuff though. I'm planning on starting a YouTube channel making comedy cartoon clips relating to current affairs but I want to keep myself completely anonymous. I'm wanting to open all new social media accounts, email account and domain name but all in the name of my YouTube alias so nobody without any legal power is able to track who I am. All in the interests of privacy and safety. But as part of registering all my accounts, a lot of them require a phone number. Also I'd like for my fans to be able to ring me during set hours on a phone they can't find out who owns.

Solution

Get a phone from a drug store with paid minutes you can refill at the store. Unless you are doing all of this this from a public place with free internet access, anything you do online will be traceable back to your house by the ISP.
Hey there. May be your intention are right, but doing such, is kind of a crime don't you think? And is kind of dangerous too. However, I don't know anyway you can get a sim like that. It's really tough to get it like that.

I don't see how it's a crime to want some privacy. I won't be doing anything illegal. I just don't want anybody knowing who I am while I'm posting videos to the world over the internet.

And pay cash for both the phone and the minute refills, and don't use a customer loyalty card when you make the purchases.

The answer depends on who your "enemy" is.

Ultimately if somebody wants to get you they will get a court order on the phone company.

The cellular system keeps, for ever, a log of all texts (whole) and all calls (connection data only), and the phone's location (derived from which tower is in use) at the time of each text or call and also every 10 mins or so. The log includes the SIM card ID, the phone's IMEI, etc.

So the log will have a comprehensive data on your movement pattern, and if you use a different phone for everything else, that will show the same movement pattern :)

If you want privacy from that, you won't have it unless the phone is used just once. Criminals know this, nowadays. They use one-off phones.

If you are *not* at risk of a court order, then it is easier. Just get a phone for cash, a prepaid SIM card for cash, and never use it to contact anybody or access any online facility which is "relatable" to you (e.g. call your mum).
