is it possible to have an external monitor to a laptop and use them as two seperate displays?

hey guys the title of the thread says it all, when hooking up a monitor to a laptop i get a mirror image of what's happening on the laptop. is it at all possible to have them be two separate display? so that i can have a kind of semi dual screen setup between the monitor and laptop

yes just make the settings in screen resolution top identify both monitors, then just click extend display, you will now have another display practically with its own webpages and whatever else you like.
