Hi everyone,
I was looking to upgrade a dell optiplex for a friend, but I'm afraid the new hard ware I'm putting into it will overheat because the machine only has the 1 fan. I was just wondering if I could put some new fans into it or if there's some other cooling method. Thanks.

Solution
The single fan you're so concerned about draws 1.3Amps. A typical ATX fan draws about .25Amps. Get a Dell heatpipe cooler. T9303, or D9727. Heatpipes are arranged differently. With slight mod to fan shroud they are interchangeable if you have the tall cover. If not then get one. T9303 is better. That fan will cool a QX6800 at 3.45Ghz no problem. Cooling is not going to be a problem. BTX was designed to cool Pentium4's and PentiumDs at 3.73GHZ, and 130W. That fan is running at about 30% of it's maximum speed. I have pics. posted at Overclock.net LGA775 Club as "Retrorockit". If you really need more fan the Delta GFB1212VHG bolts in, but at 3.4Amps it has to run off of a Molex and throws fan error messages at boot. It has 2 motors so some...

It cools 3.73GHZ QX6800 at 40% speed. Unplugging the blue PWM wire sends the fan to 100% speed. That's how I got the 4GHZ validation.

There were 2 fans Dell used in these. 1.3-1.4 Amp BetaV , or Matsushita, or the Delta 1.6Amp AFC1212DE. with the cooler out you can see which you have.
One mod worth doing is to install a small expansion slot exhaust blower to keep hot air from collecting behind the video card. It makes no difference in CPU cooling but can lower GPU temps a lot. Just for fun there are lots of Youtube videos of Delta fans at full speed. GFB1212VHG, AFC1212VHE,AFC1212UHE among others. The reasons for fan swapping in BTX is for noise reduction at high overclocks, and to remove the electrical load off of the motherboard for more watts to the CPU again for higher O/C. The Big Daddy of 120mm fans is the GFB1212VHW 75mm deep and 4Amps it will stick out of the fan holder by about an inch but will probably fit in an Optiplex.
