is it possible to upgrade to W8 without having to re-install everything?

You buy an upgrade edition of W8 .
But it also depends on what operating system you start with on whether you can do this

Im on windows 7 right now, 64 bit

From win 7 64 bit to win 8 64 bit is an easy upgrade

but I am not sure its worth it .
Most of us using win 8 immediately customize it to look and behave as much like 7 as possible .........

It says if I'm on W7 and upgrading to W8 I can only keep personal files, not applications like google chrome, games, programs etc. couldn't I just re install all those applications but not have to re download them?
