I want to use those two cards on the same motherboard. I know you cannot use crossfire with that combination, but I just want them running in conjunction and only on one monitor. Is this actually possible and will it help me?

Specs:
AMD Quad Core Fx 4100 3.4 ghz
2GB Radeon 7850
Corsair 750w
No overclocks/hardware tweaks, no problems with overheating

Nope, not possible you can only CrossFire two cards with the same gpu, but they can be from different brands, have different coolers and even different clock speeds only if it is the same GPU

What would happen if I simply didn't use the Crossfire connector? Would I only be able to use one card?

Theres no way of running two amd cards together without a crossfire connection

So my only option is to get a second 7850 I guess. Would my power supply be able to handle both of those? Also, since I don't have a PCI-e slot that it would fit in, I would buy an adapter (x4 -> x16). How well do those generally work?

you would need to upgrade your mother board running a 7850 in a 4x slot would give you horrible performance. just saying .. my two cents find some one to sell the 6770 to and or the 7850 and upgrade to a more powerful single card.

Would I reap any benefit at all from buying a second 7850 and putting it in that 4x? Would I be able to use crossfire with set up, or/and would it just be a waste of $200?
Are there any better/cheaper options for what I could put in that 4x slot if I wanted to boost gaming performance?
