I was thinking about getting a pair audio technica m50x headphones, i have heard that you need a sound card in your pc. I don’t have a sound card as of right now so is it really necessary to take advantage of these headphones?

your motherboard should have the sound built in. hasn't been an issue for like 20 years when you needed a separate sound card.

the only time one is needed now is if you are planning on high end professional sound creation/recording and even then it's a bit debatable if the onboard sound isn't good enough for that as well.

Why not try the included Motherboard HD sound and then decide?

The original rationale for a sound card was to offload the cpu processing needed.
With discrete sound chips of today, that is no longer valid.
