Hi, for Mac OS and Linux, it is recommended to create a user account even only one person is using the laptop. One of the reaons is to avoid possible mess up with the system settings, virus, etc. On the Windows laptop, is it recommended to do it?

Solution

I always do.
All of my system have a standard user for every day use, and an admin account, only used when needed.

No, not 'Family member'
That will require all the MS account stuff.

Other Users
Add someone else to this PC
I don't have this persons sign-in information
Add a user without a Microsoft account
Give it a user name and password

Thanks. I made a mistake then. How do I delete the family member? Threre is no such option. Only "Change account type" or "Block".

As for adding someone else, under "Create an account for this PC", it asks me to enter a username under "Who's going to use this PC?" Is this the username going to appear as part of the path (for example, like /usr/david in linux) or it is the one to show up on the logon screen and My Info (for example, Mr. David Ivy)?

Whatever you enter there is the user account name.
David, or GamingGuy, or ModeOnOff, or whatever...
/Users/GamingGuy/...

Thanks. I created it and switched to this user. On the login screen, it shows something like GamingGuy. Can I have some other name without affecting the user account name and path name? For example, "Mr. David Roberson" shows up on the login screen but I still get to keep /Users/GamingGuy

I don't think so, and that would be very confusing.

OK. Even I entered all small letters like "gamingguy", when I logged into this account, the login screen states "GAMINGGUY". Is this the way windows work?

When I set up the laptop, it asked me to enter my first name and last name. On my login screen for this main administrator account, I have something like "Mr. David Roberson". Does that mean windows already created a path name with these three words in it? Do I have to worry about the path name of this admin account? What can I do to fix this mess? Is it a good idea to just create another user account called "Administrator" and give it an administrator status. After its creation, delete the first "Mr. David Roberson" admin account that I originally created when I turned on the machine for the first time.

No, All caps is not the way it works

For the "Mr. David Roberson", Yes, that's what it did.
And that is the basic Admin account for this OS install.
And yes, there is a path of /Users/Mr. David Roberson
That dot in the middle may screw things up.

The first account created is the admin account

You can create new accounts, both Admin and Standard.

Thanks. How come it automatically changed to all caps then?

In regard to the family member I created by mistake (the one with "Mr." as part of the name), I am still unable to remove it. Under "Family & other people", I clicked on the name but only "Change account type" and "Block" options are available. There is no Remove option.

One strange thing is that under "Family & other people" "Your family", there is a line in red sayng "We can't connect to Microsoft family at the moment, so your family on this device might not be up to date." Under the family member account, it says "Adult, Pending". These two status lines have been around for hours already.
