Hello,

I've got a GTX 1080 paired with I7-8700 and 16GB of ram.

The GPU can go up to 1936Mhz since is factory OC.

I usually play all my games at 60 fps 1080p and here comes the question. Is it safe to downclock the gpu since i don't get past 60 fps and 1936mhz i belive is too much. Should i downclock it?

If answer to both questions is "yes" then here comes another question. Do i just have to set a lower clockspeed using software like MSI Afterburner or do i have to change voltage and other values too?

Solution
For down clocking there's no reason to touch any of those voltage values. Anyway why messing with these facts if you really want to stick with 60fps then use a fps limiter. Pretty sure you can do it with MSI Afterburner as well. So the card usage will not reach near maximum you should be able to stay in a lower clock speed for sure.

It's even hard to say what frequency should be there to get 60fps. Because it entirely depend on the game. As long as you want to stay near 60, FPS limiter will be the option.

Thing is in some games GPU clock will fluctuate, and in the moments when clock will go down there is a FPS drop and a freeze of the game for a moment. I want to use "Adaptive" or "Max performance" in nvidia control panel but at the same time i don't want to have max clock speed when it is not required. I will try to find the sweetspot in terms of clock for each game i play. I just need to know if it's safe to lower clock using afterburner or anyother software out there.

I do use a FPS limiter.

Here. At those moments gpu clock is going down to 1266mhz and the fps drop. GPU seems is going to sleep for moments

Yes i see... As i mentioned it will not be problem even if you down clock but i should say use the right tool. don't use any other software ... make sure you download that MSI Afterburner through their official sources.

Here is the Link : download.msi.com/uti_exe/vga/MSIAfterburnerSetup.zip

You are trying to manually control something that the gpu is already programmed to do a million times a second. It adjust voltage, clock, memory speed and cooling all on its own. The card is smarter than you are let it do its job and just leave it at base settings and you will be fine. The gpu will only use power it needs. Just set the card to adaptive mode in Nvidia control panel under power management and it will do all the work for you. :]
