is it safe to enter credit card details when inside a vpn

Is using a VPN safe or unsafe.. ? I recently tried Hotspot shield and it seemed that they are tracking everything I'm doing.. depending on what I click.. they were popping up relevant ads, messages, prompts for upgrade etc.. So that raised the question.. If I was actually inside a VPN connection and purchasing something online, is the VPN provider able to record my credit card info ..

The Provider has to keep track of whatever you're doing irrelevant of whether it's a VPN or Not.
How safe is it??
It's safe since he (the provider) is the only one knowing what you do, but, if your machine is infected with malware or backdoors even he (the Provider) can't be held responsible.
VPNs are not usually meant for doing stuff on the internet. they're more official and are usually used for secure office to office connections.... a misuse of the network increases it's vulnerability to outside snooping and infiltrations.
It would be nice to read the legal T&C of the provider for the VPN he's providing.

A better solution would be to use something like a secure shell on your machine.... something like Kaspersky's Safe Money..... for transactions that you happen to do online.... be it any network , atleast you'll sleep in peace knowing whatever was done in that shell stays inside of it.
