Is it safe to plug an infected hard drive into a new computer?

Hello, I recently got a new computer but it's pretty low on space. I have an older hard drive from a previous computer that I'm fairly certain has some bad viruses on it though, and I want to wipe this drive (none of the files matter to me) so I can use it in my new computer. Thing is though, I don't have another computer that I could wipe it on, aside from my new one. Is it safe to pop this drive in to wipe it?
It's an internal drive too by the way.
EDIT: Another thing I should add: on the computer that this drive used to be on, the viruses prevented the system from booting, so I'm worried the same might happen to my new computer and force me to buy a new drive.

No don't if you have games from steam... Games will come with files called steamapi or something like that and if that gets corrupted your games will no longer work.... Dont use the drive Bro even more bad can happen
