Solution
Unless you're planning to upgrade the CPU, you don't need to update BIOS. However, if you do, regarding AM4 boards, it may drop support for older CPUs but the release notes on the BIOS update should tell you which CPUs are getting dropped.
First: be sure to read and understand the manual in regards of updating the bios.

Then - in general, this is the common procedure (assuming the new bios are compatible with both old and new CPU model) :
  1. Backup your bios if possible.
  2. before start : Take precautions to minimize any risk of electrical outage (because sudden electrical outage tend to brick your motherboard if it happens while updating bios).
  3. Update bios procedure.
  4. Test if the computer are able to boot properly (useful to know if you need to go back)
  5. Replace the CPU
In the past, I have experienced that if boot at #4 or after #5 fails, then clearing cmos may help.
