Is it safe to use 3rd party cables with a non-modular PSU?

My current GPU is a GTX 960 that requires a 6 pin PCI-E cable, the GPU I'd like to upgrade to requires 2x 6 pin PCI-E cables.

Unforunately, I lost the box of my PSU (Cooler Master Thunder M 620) with all the unused cables inside awhile ago.

Is a 3rd party cable safe? I've heard bad things and a lot about the risks of shorting your entire system, etc. What about a good brand such as Cablemod?

I don't know much about this topic. Will any 6 pin PCI-E cable do? Are there any specifications I should look for when purchasing a 3rd party cable?

No idea what unit the thunder m is.

So no without knowing exactly what cable you need it's not safe to just plug in a 3rd party modular cable.

You run the risk of killing the PSU or the entire system , pinouts from different units are totally non standard.

@Countmike - the issue is it's a thunder m from 2012.

You won't find a reaplacement cable anywhere .

Cant even find any reviews or strip downs on the unit.

V series cables are eaay to find , however the thunder is a completely different platform.

@daszani - isnt the cable you currently have connected a 6+2 (8) pin ??

If so it should be relatively safe to run a 8 pin to twin 6 pin splitter cable from it.

8 pins offer 150w power draw.
6 pins offer 75w

So splitting that 8 pin keeps within the spec of the PSU.
