so i bought a new gpu, aorus rx 580 4gb version (had a gtx 660 from palit) and i have a 6 pin adapter, is it safe to use it until my 6+2 adapter that i bought arrives?

I have a 500w PSU
and i won't use the gpu for gaming until the adapter comes, i will only use it for netflix and stuff

Solution

All you need to power the RX 580 is a single 8-pin connector. Even if it has an 8-pin + 6-pin you don't have to use the 6-pin.

Decent 500 or 550W power supplies have at least an 8-pin (6+2-pin) PCIe power connector. If yours does not have one, then it is not recommended that you use an adapter because the power supply is not meant to provide that much power and/or the connector may not use high enough gauge wiring to handle the amount of power.

Installing a GPU without knowing the specifics about your power supply is a risky thing to do.

I think I'd recommend against that configuration. I've seen where molex to sata power adapters have started a fire in a PC, actually leaving scorch marks on the inside of the case and melting the plastic connectors on the drive.

If you are ok risking your system, feel free, but a new power supply is recommended.
