is it still worth upgrading to intel i7 3770 from i5 2400?

hi, i'm planning on upgrading my cpu alone since i cant upgrade all my hardware for now. currently, my set-up uses an i5 2400 (lga 1155) and i'm leaning on upgrading it to i7 3770 as they have the same socket so i wouldnt have to change my mobo along with it. currently, bnew of this processor in my place is 300$.

is the performance difference worth the upgrade from i5 2400 to i7 3770?

Depends on the uses. For gaming, probably not. For editing, rendering, and extreme multitasking, yes.

I recommend the Xeon e3 1230v2 or 1240v2 instead of the 3770 though. They're $219 and $250 respectfully.

It is faster in every way. Also depending on your Motherboard you can Overclock the i7 3770k. If you can get a Deal on the i7 than it is a good trade off. The only thing is the performance gains are going to noticeable in more heavily threaded tasks. Obviously it won't really give a huge gain in gaming... rendering videos could be up to 50% faster.

Also I keep forgetting about intels HD graphics were not that fast on Sandy bridge especially their non high tier CPUs. This slightly changes with Ivy Bridge as their less powerful processors have 3rd generation HD 2500 graphics which is about equal to the High End Sandy bridge CPU i7 2600k HD 3000. This is not only useful for Media and playing few games but Intel Quick Sync can be useful as well.

First, get the i7-3770k. Second, don't take my word for it (or the word of those in this forum who have no actual experience upgrading from the i5 to the i7). Just go to Newegg website right now, search for the i7-3770k and begin reading the reviews. On the first page of reviews are two customers that upgraded from their i5 to the i7. Let them give you real world performance difference. The link is below:

Read "Victor C." and "Joshua H." reviews. They explain the difference they experience with actual games and describe the difference in detail. Then read all of the reviews and come to your own conclusion.

Some on these forums probably can't even afford the i7, so they want to talk you out of buying it! LOL
