Is it stupid to buy a computer that has a discontinued processor?

If a computer company is selling a laptop with a discontinued processor, say, one of the C2Ds like T6600, is it better to just wait until they run out and start using better CPUs?

Solution

Depends on its price and your needs, but for me if it was cheap enough and suited my needs I would get it. If you are not in a rush then you could always wait.

The computer I was looking at goes on sale once a month, give or take, so I was thinking by the time I go to buy it, it might be close to not being in any more of their computers. And for what I'm planning on doing, more CPU power is very welcome. I guess I'll just wait and see.

You should link it for us to give you better advice.

The CPU- http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37255

The laptop is one of the Lenovo Y550's which go on sale every week with different configurations/versions. The base CPU is the T6600 shown in the link. I'm waiting for a configuration of this to come on sale:

Except I'd get 4GB of RAM, 64 Bit OS, bigger HD maybe, etc., but that's the bones of it.

Well you're waiting anyways, so there's a chance that you might run into a laptop with a i5 that is right for you, but otherwise if the laptop is right for you then get it.

I would think this would be obvious. If the machine will do what you want, at a price you are willing to pay, then buy it. If it won't perform as fast as you need, or will cost to much, then don't. For example, I bought perhaps as much as a year ago an old P3 Tablet. I bought it to watch videos to and from work, and while waiting for my shift to start. It also has a 40GB drive which is enough for a couple of seasons of stuff, and built in wifi so I can log on works free wifi. Sure a netbook would have also worked (assuming I'm willing to put up with the smaller screen and harddrive size) but it would have cost me more then the $125 shipped that I spent. I would be VERY annoyed if it was my only computer, but it does what I want, without breaking my bank.

If you need more CPU power, then keep looking/waiting. If that will work and its a good price, then buy it.
