I currently have an i5 4950 in my build with a gtx 1070, with all the new cpu releases im begining to consider upgrading, to something a bit newer and higher performance. I already know I am going to have to change socket for any real performance upgrade, so if anyone could suggest cpu/mobo's I would appreciate it. I mainly use my pc for 1080p gaming on a 144hz monitor so I like my fps high and a bit of photo/video editing. Thanks in advance

gaming? stay with what u have right now, still fine
productivity? upgrading to Ryzen is the best answer i could give (seeing the price/performance it gives) while on the gaming performance Ryzen lacks a bit coz of the lower per core speed, they do make it up with more cores which in turns gives u a better gaming performance stability and more futureproof as the future games should utilize more cores.
if you're going Ryzen, what we can suggest depends on your budget and your plan:
~300$: a R5 1500X and a B350 mobo (not recommended since the total price is pretty close to the next tier, but im suggesting it anyway) [1500X is the only X-CPU that comes with a free cooler]
~400$: a R5 1600 and a B350 mobo (taking the 1600X means u won't get the free cooler)
~500$: a R7 1700 and a B350 mobo (taking the 1700X / 1800X means u won't get the free cooler)
SLI later on: get a X370 mobo instead of a B350 (will cost more)

if u compare the i7 7700k with the R7 1700, the i7 does comes out on top, but, on the terms of price/performance? not worth it i think, espcially when there's some news that 7700 had some stutter here and there in CPU intensive games (4c/8t, that's why i don't recommend the 1500X since they are the same, but at least they are cheaper) and productivity performance? pretty obvious that more cores/threads will fetch better performance

A few specs are beginning to leak out about the initial batch of upcoming Coffeelake SKUs, where the 8700K is rumored to be a 6 core/12 thread at 3.7 GHz. Barring a massive increase in IPC, or ability to OC up to 4.5 GHz or so, I seriously doubt if this will overtake even the 7700K in gaming....

let's see the price first, with that amount of performance, if the price is the same as 7700k (or near-priced), it will cannibalize the 7700k, but if it's higher, then i rather suggest he get a Ryzen instead...
