Is it worth buying a GTX 1070 with a 60Hz monitor?

I'm building a new system and am stuck at what graphics card I should buy. Currently I'm at:

CPU - i7 7700K
MBo - Asus Prime z270AR
RAM - HyperX Fury 2x8GB
PSU - EVGA NEX650G

I'm wondering if it's worth me spending extra for a 1070 with my current monitor since I won't see more than 60 fps anyway. I'm planning on gaming and recording gameplay to edit and upload. Should I get the 1070, or go for a 1060/RX580 and save the money and upgrade monitor and GPU together later on? The 1070 is going to be about $125 more than the RX580 would be

I would suggest waiting until the Vega reveal next week. Then see how Nvidia reacts with pricing. Buying now would be a mistake as prices are going to drop very soon. Once Vega is 'known', then you can better judge what card offers the best value to performance.

As of now, I think the 1070 is a better option with your current system and it offers some security for a year to three going forward, depending on your choice of games and monitors, obviously. A 1080, while far more than you need for 1080/60hz is a great insurance plan but costlier at the moment.

You are caught in GPU/monitor Purgatory. We've all been there at least once, some are bogged down there forever. LOL Wait. Be patient for another week or two and watch the...
i'd stick with the RX 580 for $125 less. A GTX 1070 is pretty overkill for 60 Hz 1080p, good for 1080p 144 Hz or 1440p. But that said, if you plan on going higher resolution/refresh rate anytime in the near future a GTX 1070 wouldn't be a bad investment. If your current monitor isn't great and you'll use the spare cash for it if you get a RX 580, go for something with FreeSync. Hope this helps :)

Don t listen to the overkill things, if you can afford then go for it. I m using 2 gtx 1080 SLI for 1920x1080 and 60 hz, why? Because Witcher 3, Crysis 3 would not run at 60fps+ on a single gtx 1080, and while the new games becomes more demanding you will find yourself more and more often that you cannot get 60fps+ on full HD.

not all people run their games on absolute ultra settings. i say that the OP should wait for Vega cards to launch and pick a GTX 1070 alternative and run it with a 1080p freesync monitor. the cards are going to be unveiled on 16th of may and should be cheaper than Nvidia's cards as AMD always has been doing.

Something must be really wrong with your build then... I run Witcher 3 on Ultra at a constant 60 FPS with minor dips to the 50s is swamps and forests but nothing major, and on card just below a GTX 1070. This is with everything enabled/Ultra except HairWorks garbage.

A GTX 1070 is more than is needed for most games at 1080p 60 Hz unless you want every single setting cranked to maximum. An RX 580 8GB and GTX 1060 6GB are ideal for 1080p 60 Hz gaming. 1x GTX 1080 in 1080p is already over investing, 2x of them is plain idiotic.

I wouldn't say a 1070 is overkill these days. What I would do is to get a 1070 first and enjoy high frames while saving up for a 144Hz 1080p monitor. Another option is to go for a 1060 (which went down in price considerable since the 1080ti launch) and sell the old monitor and use the money from the savings and sale to get a 144Hz monitor ASAP. 144Hz is very important and you wont regret it. I think that should be your main goal, and whatever you get should be geared towards achieving that.

A 1060 will provide good value gameplay in 1080 144hz for most games with occasional slight slowdown. A 1070 will bring significant extra performance and longevity over and above that.

Currently I'm using a:

I'm thinking I'll go with the RX580 and put the extra $125 towards a 144Hz monitor. I'll consider upgrading the GPU when Vega launches or when Nvidia releases a new series of cards, depending on how Vega performs

In that case, try grab a FreeSync one if you can it'll help with the RX 580 8GB (and potentially Vega in the future) they shouldn't cost much of a premium either unlike G-Sync.

I dont get it, why do you impose someone you dont know how to play? I m the type of guy who likes to benefit from teh latest tehcnologies adn ultra graphics with everything on max (including hairwork) and trust me a single gtx 1080 would drop under 60 in graphical intense areas so is crysis 3 (the two favorit games of mine). If you are willing to sacrifice hairworks and AA i m not so you dont have any ideea if OP is willing also to sacrifice quality or not. I was just asnwering his question if it is overkill and i stand by my answer which is:for 1080p a gtx 1070 is far from overkill because it cannot maintain in some games 60+fps so if it can afford it, he should buy it. Someoen else amde a nice suggestion which i agree on, he can wait a week or so for VEGA which i can see from benchmarks it is a gtx 1070 equivalent but it might be cheaper.

I apologise if you took insult from my previous comment it was not meant to be insulting towards you.

I'm simply pointing out what would be best for OP's situation. As he is currently limited to a 1080p 60Hz, a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB are the best price/performance ratio he can look out and as he stated in the original post, going a RX 580 allows him enough cash left over to put towards a new monitor. This could mean something like a 1080p 120/144 Hz FreeSync display or whatever interests him. Now whilst a RX 580 8GB won't drive every game at absolute maximum settings at 60 FPS solid, it's a great middle ground and depending on what he plays, could easily suit his needs. No need to overspend on a Graphics Card simply to have slightly higher AA and special effects when he can use saved cash to get a better looking and smoother monitor to begin with. The goal here is "I'm wondering if it's worth me spending extra for a 1070 with my current monitor". Which in my opinion, it is not so he can "go for a 1060/RX580 and save the money and upgrade monitor and GPU together later on?".

You are caught in GPU/monitor Purgatory. We've all been there at least once, some are bogged down there forever. LOL Wait. Be patient for another week or two and watch the Vega developments and see if pricing moves. Then choose. You can always upgrade the monitor later and you may decide that 1440p at 27" is a nicer move.... or not. Either way, the longer you wait, the less you will spend.

For now we all agree that the best move right now is to wait for vega to see what will happen. Either way you will see a price drop from nvidia and you can afford a gtx 1070 which will be a much better option for future or you get a vega which is a gtx 1070 equivelent for less money (AMD is renown to offer nice performance for low price). Too bad that AMD cannot offer something at gtx 1080 level 🙁 .

there should be something having GTX 1080 level performance according to this article: https://www.techpowerup.com/233004/amd-works-on-at-least-three-radeon-rx-vega-skus-slowest-faster-than-gtx-1070

I don't know why is it so. Dragos says witcher 3 would not run at 60fps on a single 1080.... Problem is my rig goes 72fps as a average.. and the lowest fps it reaches is 61.. i never saw it coming bellow that rate. That's the performance of a single 1070... As i know 1080 perform 25% better than 1070. So...

It seems that witcher 3 has some performance issues on Ryzen, i had an 1700X back then and that was holding me back in witcher 3, even if it tell me that the gpu is used 100% the performance was really low because of ryzen. Ryzen works very well in most of the titles except a few (Witcher 3, Far Cry series and starcraft 2). Now i changed to a i7 6900K and everything gone up with almost 20-30%.
