Is it worth getting an SSD just for the OS?

Well basically I've been really bugged hearing more noise from my hard drive, and weird Windows 7 bootup. So I have a WD 2TB green hard drive which I currently store my OS on, as well as everything else. I get a bit of a weird boot up usually, this is how it goes - So first the Gigabyte mobo thing comes up, as normal, then it takes me to the Windows 7 loading screen, like the one before the log on screen, that takes a normal amount of time, and then it will give me a black screen for usually 2 to 5 seconds, and then takes me to the logon screen. It usually will not play all of the Windows 7 boot up tune, like you usually only hear the last two notes of it, and that's a bit annoying, but once logging in it's usually fast enough. Just irritating. Also a lot of the time my hard drive makes a whole ton of noise, regular clicking noises, but very often, usually straight after login, which also leads to vibration of the case. I'm just wondering if these are the sort of things that will be helped if I get an SSD for Windows 7 only. And also what I know would be a pro, is that if my hard drive died which it will in about 1 and a half years, I'd still have an OS and wouldn't have reinstall it. But I don't know if I'd spend the money just to get that. Also, what size SSD should I get? I know a lot of people get like 250GB or 128GB and then go ahead and only use it for the OS, but surely the OS doesn't take up that much? I mean I thought it would be around 4GB it would take. Anyway I've got my eye on this Intel one that's 40GB and only like £30-£40 so should I get that or more? Thanks.

I don't know what version of windows 7 your using but im sure it takes more then 4 GB of space your drive sounds like its dying the speed from a SSD will trump that you ever seen with that green drive. 40 gig really isn't work it a lot of folks use a 120 for the os and updates and a few programs then at least 1 Tb for files ,games and apps on a regular Hard drive once you go SSD you wont go back.

A solid state is a great addition to your pc and it's insane the performance difference when it comes to boot time and basic operating system functions. I have a 120gb Samsung 840 evo with just Windows 8.1 and some odds and ends on it and that has taken up 24gb or so. I would recommend at least a 120gb. They are really cheap anymore. So yeah I think it's totally worth it.

How does my drive sound like it's dying? The clicking is normal, it just sounds like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QqmWO0Xp_s . I've never had any problems with it apart from this weird boot and I know a few people who do have this anyway. Plus HD tune and HD sentinel both say the drive is perfect. Are you trying to scare me or something?

Thanks for your input, and thanks everyone else. Yeah I'll get 120GB just in case and it should perform a little better and and I guess they're around £60 so you get better value with 3x what 40GB is. A shame we can't all just use like 2TB of SSD because they're so expensive. Surely not THAT expensive to make.

Alright well I'm using a pirated Windows 7 so I'm not sure if that'll use more or what, but it should just be a cracked version of Win 7 Ultimate.

And we're done here.
Don't buy an SSD, buy a legal copy of Windows first.

Closing this.
