I have 2x4GB of DDR3 1600 CL9 and need to get some memory for a build for my GF so I was going to give her mine and upgrade to 16GB.

Looking at DDR3 2400 as my motherboard supports up to 2133 but the price premium is pretty hefty.

I will probably go with a Skylake or Cannonlake upgrade as I'm still rocking sandy bridge, so DDR4 is probably going to be required for that.

TLDR: Is it worth getting DDR3 2400 over 1600 especially when I will probably be upgrading in the next year

Solution
No.

In general, beyond 1600MHz C9 even for a high-end rarely shows any REAL WORLD benefits.

I recommend 1866 C9 or 2133 C9 depending on both cost and quality (customer feedback scores is a rough indication of quality).

*If you don't actually need the 16GB (video editing, VM or similar but not gaming yet), then I recommend just KEEPING your existing setup and buy your girlfriend different DDR3 memory since you've already validated the DDR3 works in your own system so why mess with that?

Solution
yeah I know I should probably just keep what I got but I recently did a custom loop in a new case, all black and red (original I know!) and the memory I have in there is the not so hot HyperX Blu that was dirt cheap years ago. and it is bright blue 🙁

Looking at:
http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-pro-series-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr3-dram-1866mhz-c9-memory-kit-cmy16gx3m2a1866c9r

but it is designed for Ivy and Haswell - will this be an issue do you think?

I'm in NZ and we don't have that many options here - HyperX G.Skill or Corsair is pretty much it
