Is it worth to upgrade from c2d to i3

hello new member from egypt here old fan though
i have c2d e8500 @ 3.5
and a gtx 660 oc edition
3gb of ram

i experienced a bottle neck in games like farcry3 . hitman and crysis


can i make this bottleneck go away forever if i baught an i3 3220 ??

or i wont notice a much difference between the 2 cpu's

i want to take 100% of my gpu power even if i decide to overcloack it

can this i3 make it happen or i wait like 6 months and get i5 ?

You will see improvement.but i strongly reccomend to wait and get i5.i3 is still a dual core so you need quad core with gtx 660 for better gaming.

I3’s cannot be over clocked. You can over volt and over clock the memory and the GPU if you have a good motherboard, but not the CPU.

If you don’t care about an on-board graphics package and you don’t need hyper-threading then you can get a base model i5 for $30 more than the top of the line i3. But only K series i5 ‘s can be over clocked.

If you want to play Crysis 3 you will need a new motherboard, i5 and GPU. They have announced that only PCIe 3.0 will be supported.

To answer your question, both the i3 and the i5 will solve your bottleneck. But you will most likely be happier with an i5K series.

At the same clock speed you would see around a 30% performance improvement by going from the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo to the Intel Core i3. However like the others have said moving to an Intel Core i5 like the Intel Core i5-3570K would be the best optoin.

i will notice 30% improvment and get like 95% of my gpu power ??

thanks for your great explaination so i cant play crysis 3 on my g31 board lol thats so bad .. i think they made this game to make ppl buy new hardware even if they dont need it actually there is no difference between pci 1.1 and 2.0 and 3.0 its only 2% more performance max . shame on them

You're kidding me, Crysis 3 requires PCIe 3.0? That's damn ridiculous. So my 2x 6870 in Crossfire won't be able to play it. *slaps forhead*

EDIT: Actually, please show me where it says this. Minimum system requirements are much lower. It only looks like PCIe 3.0 is recommended for high-performance.

I see what you mean... I have a "similar" system (c2d E8400, P43 chipset, 4x1GB ddr2 800 4.4.4.12 2.1V, GTS 450 oc ed) and I have a friend who has a core i3-2100 with H61 chipset, 2x4gb ddr3 1333 and GTX550 Ti oc ed, I have to say his pc runs more smoothly than mine in games, it is noticeable. I get 30-45 fps in far cry3 with all details at low... but it does not have that smoothness as a new generation processor.

if you want the i3-3220 choose a MB that suports pci-ex 3.0, ddr3 1600, sata 3, and usb 3.0. the cheapest one I think is the B75 chipset. H61 it is more for 2nd gen i3/i5.

To OP: I would recommend for moneys sake getting a used upper end Core 2 Quad. They come pretty cheap on eBay. That way you can keep your original mobo.

Ah, that's a relief, thanks. It even looks like they'll have Crossfire support at ship, although I'll believe the stability of that when I see it. And hopefully that's Crossfire support on last-gen cards, too.

did you try to overclock your e8400? its easy
mine runs on 3.5 only with voltage 1.184 for solid 3 months

his card is so close to yours i can see . but i dont have issues with smoothness i need more fps to get the most out of my card with the new games that will come out

my friend have i5 2400 and same card and he can play fc3 ultra dx 11 with all dx11 stuff tured on and 4x msaa with 35-40 fps

i do same and i get 20 -24 fps so i play ultra on dx9 with silky smooth 35 average fps

so i wonder how i3 will do

I just bought the same processor and i am using a gtx 460 graphic card .....before this i was using phenom x2 545.....my fps was around 35-37 now it went upto 51-55 consistently...........but i will strongly advice t not to buy the GA-H61M-S2P-B3 they are not fully compatible with the new i3 3rd generation you can get gigabyte b75m-d3h or msi b75a-p45 or any thing that is not using chipset 61 or below try getting 75 or 77 they relatively new and fully compatible.

I know it is easy to oc the E8400, but I have the stock cooler, and the MB is passively cooled. I get really high temp, at full load 3.6 GHz.

I also know that the latest drivers from nvidia improves the performance on gtx 660 in far cry 3. - 310.90

The i5-2400 it's a very good processor... and I think it will be a difference between this and an i3 in most applications.

If you are going from a C2d to an i3 you will have to change out the motherboard anyways. So why not go with an AMD FX 6300? It is about the same price as the 3rd gen I3 and it has 6 cores. While it seems to be a bit slower than the I3 on single core applications, it is a good deal faster on multi-core. Additionally, you can over-clock it.

dragonlord amd cpu's guzzle through electricity. Amd have gone with the pentium 4 route high power consumption ghz anbd this time cores with slow performance high power consumption etc but cheap price. Its actually embarrassing especially once overclocked how far amf are behind. Put it this way you could run 2 i7 3770k computers at 5ghz vs fx7400 at 5ghz and the itel 2 cpus lets say at 5ghz will sip less power 100% load and beat the fx6300 easily even at stock single 3770k. Yes I know 3770k is expensive but a 3450 i5 would do.

Yes, yes they do! I guess electric rates are cheap enough that I don't really take that into account. But, for those of you who are concerned, I suppose an underclocked Intel would be best.

Here's the thing
That processor is a 755 LGA socket
Will not work with the I3/I5/I7 Series
That is 1155
I3 processsor with hyper threading only 20% faster

very true you ca go with any one of these motherboards...............but again i will advice you that core i5 200 is same price as the new core i3 3570k which is amuch better gaming cpu + it has low power consumption of 77 w buying it prepares your computer to be latest for atleast 3-4 years.............on the other hand i5 2400 doesnot support ddr3 1600mhz......has a lower clock rate i5 2400=3.1 i5 3570=3.2.................i5 3570 also supports pci 3...................also i5 3570 has a wireless display support ..........again price is exactly the same
