I have msi gtx 960 2gb ! soon i will buy i7 6700 and 16gigs ddr4 . I will use this build for both gaming . slightly editing and programming and develpoing tasks. I just want to know should i sell the 960 and buy a new 970 or i should keep the 960 and upgrade after pascel releases? Is it really worth upgrading from 960 to 970 for now ?

Solution
You'll see a massive improvement with the i7 skylake mate - you're talking maybe 20-30fps in games at least.

Hold off on the GPU upgrade - you may find the i7+960 suits you fine.
Wait for Pascal to release & worst case scenario then you'll get a 970 for around 70% of what it costs now -.

Thanks For your reply . I have 1080p monitor and i wont get any higher than that in upcoming 2-3 years . I think 1080p is just fine for me .

I disagree - a 970 even at 1080p has headroom to do things a 960 can't, and has room for games that will as always become more demanding over time. I know my 970 works harder and does a lot better at 1080p (in GTA-V and Mad Max are two games that I've played on both recently) than my 960 ever did.

So u think i should sell my 960 ? 🙁 If i sell now i wont get much but i can somehow manage extra money for a 970 ! I think i will lose about 100usd 🙁 for selling my 960

I can't answer that. I'm in a position that the money difference didn't really matter to me (and I palmed the 960 off on my daughter's build). If $100 is a big deal, stick with the 960. If it's bearable, you will notice a difference - the 970 will have a significant amount of extra horsepower for demanding stuff and will be quieter as it's working less hard for less taxing games (I notice the difference playing my daughter at CS:GO in the same room - her card is working a lot harder than mine and it's fans are a level or two louder for the same experience / gfx settings).

Ohh! For now 100 bucks is a big deal for me I think 🙁 Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts . I also play cs go 😛 .Another thing, whats your thought about r9 390 8 gb ? its less expensive and has 8gb vram but i have used amd cards ike 5850 and r9 270x personally i have seen nvidia drivers are much better comparing to amd and fps stays more stable in nvidia . i know many fan boys or gamers wont agree with me but its just my opinion.

I haven't used AMD cards for a long time - about 10 years as the drivers when they were ATI were... 'variable' in quality. I prefer nVidia from a power consumption (less power, less heat, less noise which is a biggie for me) and I've never had a reason to change from them, so I'm not the best person to ask as I have not run a modern AMD card.

I'd stick with the 960. The 970 does ~50% better in Benchmarks, and if 50% extra performance is worth it to you for 300$, then go for it. Personally, I'd continue to use the 960 then upgrade when pascal/polaris comes out.

hello there! I think i should stick with my 960 for now . I have amd phenom 2 x4 955 and 8 gb ddr3 ram , within 1 month I will buy i7 6700 and 16 gigs ddr4 , do u think I will see improvement with my current 960 ? Now i face lags and shuttering in almost every game with my amd processor .

That I don't know😛. Ask a CPU or memory expert. I just know about how every graphics card performs in comparison to every other card, and how much of a performance gain you can get from upgrading. I also know how to give advice. That's about it.😀. The RAM should give you a little performance boost, I think. The i7 6700 is much better than the phenom 2 x4 955, but you already know that.

The 970 is quite a bit better than a 960 but as others have said I would wait for Pascal before upgrading. You will most likely be able to buy a Pascal card in the 970s price range that is a much more substantial upgrade from your 960.

I have a rule that I will not buy 2 cards from the same generation. If would rather spend a little more the first time than be caught thinking about upgrading mid generation.

As for your question about the r9 380, absolutely do not do that. You would literally be throwing money away. It's not that the 380 is a bad card but it is in the same class as a 960. You would be spending roughly $200 to side-grade to a very similar card that uses more power. There is no upside in that.

I agree with u but i was talking about r9 390 8gb 😛 , I will keep the card and i will wait for pascel or any new generation.btw tell me about the cpu i7 6700 , will I see big improvement from my phenom 2 x4 955 3.2 ghz ?

Yes, that is a much better CPU. Unless you need hyperthreading for some other purpose I wouldn't go with the i7 though. The i5-6600k will perform just as well in games if you overclock it to the 4.0GHz that the i7 gets at stock. You should be able to overclock it to 4.4 or 4.5GHz pretty easily and that would save you about $150.

I know i5 is a beast ! but I will also use my pc for slight editing like youtube videos or developing websites etc.I want multitask 🙁 . i dont upgrade very often and i7 6700 is in my budget thats I choose it 🙁 I hope I am not wrong. Thanks a lot to u guys I wish i could have choose all of u guys answers as the solution🙁
