Hi, is it worth to upgrade from an old i3 540 (2 core, 4 threads) to a newer Pentium G5400 + H310 for a basic use of the pc? (Word, 1080p videos, film, a very little of photoshop and basic video editing)

Or should i make a bigger jump, like an i3 8100?

Thank you.

Yes it's worth it. I would highly recommend building it with an SSD for the boot drive at least. Even a cheap, 120gb Sandisk will be a huge improvement over a mechanical drive. You can always use a large and cheap mechanical drive for secondary data storage if you need more space.

The new processor and ram combined with an SSD will transform your experience.
Yes it will help a lot, even if the i3-540 is overclocked to the same clocks, there has been a lot of improvements over the years, better sata and ram alone is enough to upgrade.
The 8100 is pretty overkill for your usage and won't give enough of an uplift to justify getting it,exceptions like exporting your video apply but even there the difference isn't that big.

I wouldn't upgrade by swapping just processors. Difference would not be very noticeable. 2cores and 4 threads in both.
i3 8100 has got 4 cores / 4 threads and it makes huge difference.
SSD would make it much faster
There is many i5 4cores/4 threads dell computers from ex use from big corporations. they sell them cheap.
