Hi,
My son is complaining that movement is stuttering and lagging at times when he is playing online gaming. He also says he gets messages saying low fps. We are on BT Infinity and plugged into router by ethernet not wifi so don't think network is the issue.
I am wondering if it is sensible at all to replace any of the current components or he needs to save / wait for birthday money to buy a brand new one.

Current setup is:

• Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard
• Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz
• 8GB Crucial DDR2 memory
• Asus ENGT240 Silent graphics card
• 2 x Samsung HD501LJ 500GB 7,200rpm 16MB cache, disks (plus some other old disks used for internal backup)
• Windows 7

So all pretty old and not sure if new graphics card or SSD would help. And is the motherboard compatible with an SSD? I am assuming if I put in an SDD I would have C: on SSD to specd up widows and apps. Is that correct?

Thanks

Yeah no a new graphics card or SSD won't help that much. Too get better performance you need to give it a good clean and or rebuild it with basic components but modern components. Like an i3 instead of an i5 for example and a newer Asus mobo, etc...

Cleaning programs/security programs:

CCleaner
Clean Master
Glary Utilities
Malware Bytes Anti malware
Spybot Search and Destroy
AdwCleaner

If you download and run these programs the pc will be a lot faster and you may even find a load of malware/viruses and junk slowing the pc down. I use these programs every couple of days to improve pc performance and speed. I would recommend scanning for malware/viruses after you download anything and also using all the tools I mentions after downloads or when you have spare time.

If your son wants better performance tell him to save up for a new pc. I was once like him, I started with a Windows 98 pc, I had it for ages. Then eventually I moved to a slightly better xp machine (still very slow). Finally I went to Windows 7 and have had 2 Windows 7 pcs, one of those 2 pcs I am currently using to write this message. My latest pc is a good gaming pc, not top of the range but I still get over 60 fps on all of my games and I am very happy with it.

That pc is very old and it's specs are too outdated for games. What games does your son play? Minecraft, CS:GO, etc? I also play these games but I get 800+ fps on Minecraft and 300 fps on CS:GO and 60+ fps on other more demanding games like Far Cry 3/4.
