So I was wondering if you guys think its worth it to upgrade to a g3258 to an i3. If so how much more performance in games like fallout 4?

Specs
G3258
Msi h81m-p33
8gb ram
Gtx 650
1tb hard drive
600w psu

Solution
I'd agree with SR-71. For now you have around $60 or so invested in the g3258. An i5 would be a nice upgrade for games without going crazy or full top end. The i3 will be a slight upgrade but then you'll probably be left still wanting a bit more performance and end up looking toward an i5.

By then you'd have spend around $120 or so on the i3 and another $180 on the i5 and then you'll have $360 tied up in a system still running an i5. Or at the very least around $180 tied up in cpu's and still running an i3. I would save up just a bit more and skip the i3, invest in a cpu that will last you several years with good performance and be done with it.

Your biggest issue is the GTX 650, not the G3258. Your video card is the bottleneck regardless what CPU you're considering. I have a PC with a G3258 overclocked to 4.5 Ghz (with a good air cooler) and have tested Fallout 4 with it and a couple of GPUs I have - GTX 960 and GTX 970. It does fine. There are a couple of spots in downtown Boston near Diamond City that cause it to drop into the 30s and stutter a bit, but for the most part I'm using a mix of Ultra and High settings and keeping 50-60 FPS @ 1920x1200.

TLDR; Get a better GPU before you do anything else.
