Is it worth upgrading from a GTX 660 Ti

Hey Guys,

I've been looking around in your forums but didn't find enough info to answer my question.

I currently own a Asus GTX 660 Ti and I'm wondering whether it's time to upgrade or not. I don't know whether buying a second 660 Ti and setup or SLI is the best option for money (a new 660 Ti is only 170 EUR), or if I should upgrade to a new single card (I'd like to stay with Nvidia). At the moment I had to decrease the BF4 settings to have a smooth game. I bought the card 2 years ago and this is why I started thinking maybe it's time to upgrade.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance

Hey guys, ok thanks a lot for your quick answer and sorry for the lack of info.

I have a i5-2500k
MB is a Asus P8P67
PSU is Corsair CMPSU-520HX

I suppose I'll have to upgrade the PSU should SLI appear to be the best option?

Hi Eduello,

Man, I didn't even know the MB had to support a specific multi-gpu technology. I thought that as long as the MB had 2x PCIe 16x it was enough. Are your sure the SLI must be supported? I thought the whole "bridging" was done at the GPU level as long as the GPU could communicate with the MB....

Anyway, if this is true, it indeed means upgrading MB + PSU and therefore the whole SLI idea becomes less attractive from a budget point of view of course. Not that budget is an issue, but I'm not going to upgrade MB+PSU just for saving a couple of bucks on the GPU. If the MB+PSU is absolutely required, I'll more probably go to a single GPU then.

I guess my budget would be around 500 EUR max. Would you think I'd get something worth the money coming from a 660 Ti? Would I see the difference? It seems like a big expense for maybe not a huge gain in perfs. What do you think ?

+1 ^ I would agree with this option. You will see enough performance boost and still be ok with your present PSU.

As you see, SLI support has been listed, so it should be listed on your MB as well, if it supported SLI. And sadly yes, you need a motherboard with SLI support to use two Nvidia GPUs.

As far as single GPUs go, you can get a GTX 770 as rolli59 suggested, but anything better than that will require a stronger PSU.

EDIT: Remember to get your GPU from a good brand like MSI or Gigabyte so that you'll get cool and silent operation.

OK, so in a way maybe it's not the right time to upgrade in the case I'm only goingto touch the GPU. As rolli59 said going from 660 Ti to 770 might not be a huge wow effect and therefore I'm wondering if upgrading simply the GPU is worthwhile or not...

Should I be tempted to upgrade MB+PSU+GPU what would be my best option then?

Buy a MB socket 1155 compatible with my i5-2500k and SLI compatible. < Does this make sense to keep the same CPU?
Buy a good 750w PSU
Buy a 2nd 660 Ti to do a SLI with my current GPU

Is there a valid upgrade path for my system or will I have to change a lot of components for the upgrade to be worthwhile ?

I'd do either:
1. The CPU and the motherboard (I'd recommend Haswell), then the PSU and then SLI with another GTX 660Ti.
or
2. Just upgrade the PSU, then get a better GPU like the 780 and bother with the CPU and mobo later in the future.

EDIT: Depending on what you use your PC for, you might get some bottlenecks during the upgrade process. If you want better FPS in games sooner, go with option number 2, as your build is probably bottlenecked by the GPU at the moment.

main goal is better FPS indeed
but option 2 will be way more expensive than option 1
A new GTX 780 is around 600 EUR
I think for that price I can get more or less a new MB + PSU + CPU + a new 660Ti

In terms of perfs how do you think a SLI of 660 Ti would perform against a single 780 ?

780Ti vs GTX 760 SLI: http://muropaketti.com/artikkelit/naytonohjaimet/geforce-gtx-760-sli-vs-gtx-780-ti,3 (It's a well trusted website where I live)

GTX 660 Ti vs 760: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-760-vs-GeForce-GTX-660-Ti

So according to those benchmarks, GTX 660Ti SLI will probably get you the same performance as the 780 Ti.

Bottom line: Getting a better GPU now will instantly boost your FPS a lot, but will be more expensive in the long run. If you can afford to upgrade everything at once, definitely do that as it'll get you instantly better FPS and save your money in the long run.

Indeed, I have a Corsair Obsidian 550D, so I do not have the space for a 2nd PSU.
So it comes back down to a either :

- upgrading the GPU to a GTX 780 for example
- buying new MB+PSU+GPU and make a GTX 660 Ti SLI

Considering all what has been said + the fact that SLI will bring more noise (which I hate), heat and consumption, I might be better going for a new 780 for the moment and upgrade the MB+CPU+PSU later

Don't you think my PSU will be able to handle a 780? How do you calculate that?

Thanks again for all your replies guys, much appreciated !

First of all, your PSU only has 2 6-pin PCIe connectors, which will not do for a GTX 780.
Secondly, Nvidia recommends 600W: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-780/specifications
Last but not least, the GPU alone requires 250 W of power and your PSU can only deliver 18A*12V=216W per rail (Which is kinda awkward considering it is only a 520W PSU but Newegg's specifications say it has 3 of those rails=648W?? This gives me the impression that the PSU is not very high quality.)

Hey Guys,

Just to give you an update on this request.
I made a mistake and "forgot" I already upgraded my PSU 2 years ago to a modular SEASONIC X-760 which fully support SLI configuration.
But anyway, I've finally decided to ditch the whole 660 ti SLI idea and buy a new Hashwell MB + CPU; and keep the single 660ti for the time being ;-D
I couldn't easily find the exact same model of my Asus GTX 660ti at a decent price and I finally thought it wasn't worth the trouble trying to change my whole system just to save a couple of bucks on making a SLI of 660ti.

So I ordered the following :

- ASUS Maximus VI Hero C2
- Intel Core i5-4670K (3.4 GHz)
- Corsair Hydro Series H100i (to replace my current NOCTUA NH-U9B-SE2)

And will keep the 660ti for another year or so.
In fact atm I'm playing on BF4 and Elder Scroll Online. ESO is set to max and BF4 I'm running on High which i already very nice.

Thanks a lot for your time!
Muche appreciated

No problem!

Pick the solution maybe? 😀
