Is it worth upgrading from a i5-4690 to an i7-8600K?

I am thinking about upgrading it would it be worth it? I own a 1080Ti and play on 3 1080p monitors but may go 4k if i feel like my 1080Ti can handle games at ultra and get 60fps at 4k. My CPU now is an i5-4690 and i have not seen it bottleneck yet but idk. Would i see huge FPS gains with an i7-8600K?

Download MSI Afterburner or use window task manager to check CPU/GPU/RAM usage. If any of them runs at or near 100% consistently, then that one is bottleneck your system. If i5 is bottleneck, you can upgrade to i7 4770 or 4790 and with K version if your mobo can over clock.

Depends on what your doing. Some 4k games at ultra max out $1000 cpu's

The new cpu with be faster. Feel free to read some googled benchmarks.

You can probably game in 4k right now with that set up and be fine. You might think there would be bottleneck at higher resolution, but the GPU takes more of the workload so this won't happen or at least not very much. Below is a link with a great reply if you scroll down some and they compare the 1080ti with the same cpu at 4k and there were no issues. I make the move to 4k now and just be prepared to upgrade the CPU if some of the newer games cause an issue in the near future. I would imagine you probably get another year from the current set up and play 4k games fine. It also depends on what you are playing as well. If it's not the highest end AAA games or really unoptimized ones then that will also make a huge difference.


One thing to consider is the price of the board you will need which is going to a good 100$ and even more outside the U.S. Upgrade the displays and revisit this in a year. Another thing could be if these new windows updates are slowing you down. I have a 4460 and it appears i have some weird delays now. It could be something else, but i'm almost certain it's not. I open IE and there is a .3 second delay I never had. To soon to tell if this will affect gaming, so far I have not noticed, but I have not played really intense games the last few days.

Each new generation of CPU and GPU they get more and more efficient. You don't want to upgrade unless you actually need to. The longer you can wait the more value you will get when you upgrade. The technology just keeps getting better and better.

Remove the 6 and add a 7, thats the CPU.
