Is it worth upgrading from an FX-6100 to an FX-8350/70

Hola!

These are my current machine specs:
AMD FX-6100 @ 3.9GHz Update: with Arctic A30 Cooler
Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 Motherboard
16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM @ 1600MHz
nVidia 1070ti 8GB GPU
650W PSU

Would the performance benefit of a FX-8350 or FX-8370 be worth it over an FX-6100? They're on Amazon at the moment for £70/£130.
I'll be getting a new PC in the next year or so. This is just a temporary idea as my 6100 is starting to struggle. I can't get a stable overclock over 3.9GHz any more. This is obviously a huge bottleneck to my GPU. I regularly see my CPU at 100% utilisation and my video card at 20-30%.

[strike]Price isn't too much of an issue. As far as I'm aware though all the Ryzen CPU's are AM4 socket or later? The FX series are AM3+.[/strike]

Sorry I just got the full gist of what you were saying...

I'd rather not tbh. Because I'll be doing a full system upgrade not too far into the future, I'd rather keep cost as low as possible.

No you'd need a B350 or B450 (AM4 socket) motherboard, and DDR4 RAM.

I'd rather not to be honest. Because I'll be doing a full system upgrade not too far into the future, I'd rather keep cost as low as possible.

That's actually kind of a tough call.
For your specific situation, I'd actually say yes, for these reasons.
1) You stated that a new system next year is the plan.
2) A full platform upgrade to say, a 2600 or 2700x with mobo and decent ddr4 ram is MUCH more money, in effect building a new system now, instead of next year.
3) I can't imagine you expecting a miraculous performance increase.
However it WILL be a fair bit faster than the 6100.
A 24/7 OC of 4.4-4.6 ish @ 2400 NB should be easily attainable on a 990fx board.

This gives you better than 10% in raw clockspeed, another 10 ish % from NB IF you didn't oc the NB on the 6100, plus two more cores.
For 130 pounds.
An even more ideal situation for you personally would be an 8350/8370 used from a reliable source, for say, 1/2 or less than new price.

If a good used one is available in your area ( so you can personally see it working, hopefully at a reasonable OC, to let you know the condition of the chip.)

At 130 pounds it pretty close to not worth it, and just suffering through untill full system next year.

I would say upgrade to FX-8350 if you do it actually should be better, the FX 6100 was a Zambezi core based on bulldozer and the FX-8350 is based on Vishera/piledriver. I believe even moving to FX 6300 at the same clock speed as the FX 6100 the 63XX is around 10% faster (if memory serves me). That being said even moving to the FX -8350 may not yield much improvement in gaming. Thought it has much better single core spec (stock speeds) over 25% faster for the 8350.

I had not heard of Nvidia DSR! I will definitely be giving that a go!

You've just described the argument I'm having in my head down to a T.
I'd say the new system is around a year off, looking at either the Ryzen 2700X or i7 8700k (or we'll see what happens this year!). So with the money being more focused towards that, I'm leaning towards the 8350.

I'm getting more tempted by the £70 8350. £70 isn't a massive amount of money, which I feel is more worth it for the marginal gains I'll see.
And sorry I should have specified, I have an Arctic A30 cooler.
