Is It Worth Upgrading From An i7-3770(non-k) to a 3770K?

So I feel as if Im struggling to run some games I really want to play more. For example Battlefield 1 right now runs at a max of about 100fps but often I have massive frame drops on 64 player servers in the middle of a load of action which for me is very frustrating. Also in the future I plan on playing Star Wars Battlefront 2. Is it worth maybe upgrading to a 3770k and maybe overclock if possible or would it be better maybe going 2 generations up or just saving up for a 7th-Gen i7. I feel that upgrading to a 3770k would be simple but going maybe 1 gen up would be a lot of hassel for next to no performance gain. Also I have been told that I might want to get faster ram. Although I thought that doesn't increase frames in games. Also my current motherboard is more of a business motherboard so would it be worth perhaps buying a new mobo thats more tailored towards gaming?

CPU: i7-3770
GPU: GTX1070
RAM: 16GB 1600mhz
MOBO: MSI B75MA-P45

Juice is not worth the squeeze on this one.

You are talking a 4 generation old CPU, and pretty much the most sought after one, so prices are going to be quite high for it.
Current average on Ebay is around $200 for this CPU.

With a 4.2 or greater overclock you will go from being say 65% the performance of newest i7, to 70% perfromance.

So as stated that extra 5% is not worth the $200 price tage (and that is assuming your board can even overclock). Money will be much better spent saving up until next year when you can get a coffee lake i7 setup which will have 6 cores and 12 threads.

The monetary investment wouldn't be justified by the minimal FPS increase. Not even close. You would then also need to buy a new motherboard because yours is not OC friendly.

Do you have those massive FPS drops in all games?

Have you determined if the drop is caused locally? The server being accessed, the route and other variables I don't come close to understanding can affect your gameplay.

I would instead wait for Coffee Lake. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm coffee... Like the drink but it's spelled the same. Compare your performance with professional benchmarks. See if it's worth it to upgrade. I think it will be. Sell your current rig and start anew if the new Coffee Lake CPU are worth it while the 1070 is still stupidly overpriced? Then AMD is releasing their Vega line of GFX cards. Going to be interesting.

Not all games it's just Battlefield 1 seems to be my cpu bottlenecking can't do anything to get battlefield 1 to run more stable. Run other games fine like Overwatch Counter-Strike Global offensive Playerunkown's Battlegrounds etc. I will wait and keep my eyes open for Coffee Lake.... mmmm coffee... one question though. is Intel's X range anygood I heard a ton of negative things about i9's but what about CPUS like the i7-7820X with more cores and threads?

If you had a 3770K and overclocked to 4.2-4.4GHz you would probably see a good increase in performance. Not saying you should get it though. I'd try to just move on up to Coffee Lake if I were in your position. I'd get a Core i5 8600K or 8400. Either one would be amazing compared to your current CPU.

The X-Series CPUs that came out this year are a joke, and please don't buy them. The only thing worth buying from that series is the i9 7900X, which is... you know.

X299 was made with quad-channel memory support, buuuuuuuuut...
Skylake-X CPUs, e.g. i5 7640X, don't support quad channel memory.

So basically, the whole chipset is pretty much pointless. It's better just to go 7700k or Coffee Lake, or Ryzen.

EDIT: Not even to mention the ungodly motherboard prices. You have to pay for a full motherboard, except with (basically) half of its features disabled with Skylake-X.

I blame the driver. BF1 was hideous when it was released. Drivers have improved that. You might try some different drivers. Then again 1 game out of the many isn't worth it imo.

Where gaming is concerned? Skip the X. If you're a hardcore gamer, streamer and video editor/YouTuber it may be worth a look.
