My motherboard can take up to Athlon XP3200. I currently have the
Athlon XP 2400 and PC400 DDR. I want to upgrade but keep the cost down
as well. Is it worth making the upgrade? The chip is only $115,
shipped. I could maybe get $50 for my old chip. Total cost is just
$65.

What do you guys think? Would I notice any difference in speed? I
play DIVX and mp3 a lot. I play strategy games too and The Sims type
of games.

You would almost certainly be unable to discern any difference at all.

unless you encode divx movies i doubt it but then the same could be said
for anything over a ghz, if you can sell both your board and cpu the 756
boards are cheap and the amd64 is hell of a fast.

Try overclocking your CPU first. Some 2400's are really easy to do.

But not necessarily with the stock cooler from a retail boxed
cpu. :-(

I gave someone an XP 2400+ from a system that was upgraded and he
tried to overclock it by using a FSB of 150 MHz instead of the
"proper" 133 MHz. It kept crashing until I put a better fan/sink
on for him - at which point he was able to bump the FSB up even
more.

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade an XP 2400+ at this late date.
Time to switch to Athlon64 if your old XP doesn't get the job
done any more.
