Is it worth upgrading my CPU?

I'm trying to figure out if I should upgrade my CPU. I wanted to buy a new GPU, but the prices right now are insane. I built this last year (my first one), and like it, but wanted to upgrade for better gaming.

Right now I am running a Ryzen 3 1300x with an EVGA 1050ti SSC GPU. I was going to upgrade to the 1600 and get a 1060 gpu, but they cost more now than 1080's did a few months ago.

Should I go ahead and upgrade the CPU, or just leave it? I just use it to watch videos, do schoolwork and play some games.

Any help anyone can give would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'd say leave it for now and wait for the new 2x00 series of AMD Ryzen chips in April for a better upgrade path. Hopefully by then the GPU prices will go back down a bit.

The Ryzen 1700, 1700X, and 1800X came out in March of last year. With the lower models following in the months after. Your 1300X and the 1200 were the last two models in the 1x00 series to be released by AMD on July 27th of last year. AMD has confirmed that the Ryzen 2x00 series will be released in April.

What we know about the 2x00 series is that it will feature higher clockspeeds, better turboboost features (Precision Boost 2), and it is built using the new 12NM process.

Some games are capped at 60fps .
If yours are capped, the test is inconclusive.
But 60fps is quite good for any game.

The time to upgrade is when your cpu or gpu no longer does the job you want.

With an upgrade with ryzen, you mostly get more threads. The single thread performance caps out at around 3.8-3.9 with overclocking across the line. with 1600/1700/1800 you just get more threads.
For cpu limited games like sims, strategy and MMO types, faster single thread performance becomes more important.
Intel is usually better there.

For multiplayer games, more threads are good.
For fast action shooters, a stronger graphics card is more important.

For your usage, I think you should leave it be for now.
