i dont suggest going with old cpu's there are plenty of cpu that are better if you're really into somthing cheap get an intel core i3 or amd fx series dont waste you're money on 775 socket cpu's because they suck

at this point a you would be better off going with a high end Haswell or Ivy Bridge Pentium , you can keep the graphics card and a 6670 is good enough for 1280x1024 but optimally you could move up to a GTX 650 Ti or a HD 7790 for a value focused upgrade

woudnt it bottleneck new cards?

How much for the core 2 quad? If it's 60 bucks or less and you wouldn't mind a little reading there are massive gains to be had despite the information above.

The key is overclocking though and if you don't mind an hour or two of reading then it is a pretty sound upgrade..... if you buy 20 dollar cooler to go with it.

If you were to get a meager 600Mhz overclock the gains over your e7200 would be well worth it.

I had a e5200 at 4.14GHz and the quad even at just 3GHz was just worlds different for modern games. @ 3GHz the q6600 can run with almost any gpu i've got a GTX 570 it's overclocked as far as it will go and there is no bottle neck at all when run @ 3GHz.

The new pentiums are actually a surprising bargain compared to the i3s, for a machine not running extreme settings at high resolutions they work just fine and have a clear upgrade path later to i5 or i7s even
