The desktop interface and functionality of Mandrake 8.1 was way ahead of its time but I just wondered if it can be used nowadays. Windows 2000, XP, even Windows 7 cannot function well these days due to less and less software support. Does Linux face the same situation?

Linux is just fine.
Mandrake?? Not so much. 20 years ago, the name "Mandrake" was removed and changed to Mandriva.
Apparently totally gone in 2015.
